In blog years, it was ages ago when Micketymoc tagged me for this meme. I meant to reply sooner but you know delinquent blogger me, don’t you? Hehehe! Now, I’m forced to work on it because I have at least three memes I intend to do. Good way to finish a month.
Not many people know that I’m not an avid moviegoer nor a TV viewer. I like good films but if everyone’s watching one that is currently screening, I most probably will not go until I really feel like I want to see it. Now you know why I haven’t seen Schindler’s List, Jurassic Park, The Passion of the Christ and the last Harry Potter movie, among others. I’ll watch them someday but not soon. And please don’t urge me to do so soon because I’ll postpone watching them all the more.
Anyway, I was looking at Mike’s answers and we have some similarities. Aside from taking up at least a subject in film, he has good taste (I don’t, hehehe). Hmmm… batchmate factor? ![]()
Total Number of Films I own on DVD, VCD and VHS: Not much, due to reason given above. Probably around 50.
The Last Films I Bought: I can’t remember, it’s been too long.
Five (5) Films Which I Watch A Lot/ Mean A Lot To Me:
- The Tamarind Seed. One of the many movies I watched on Channel 9’s Rated: Wide Awake Movies when I was a child. I don’t know if it struck me as a good movie but I remember my surprise at how Julie Andrews can play someone other than Maria (Sound of Music) and paired with Omar Shariff at that!
- Akira Kurosawa’s Dreams. Oh my what a fantastic film! Required watching for freshman English class. I can’t begin to describe it. I’ve only seen it once but the images are still vivid - Mt. Fuji, wolves, ghost soldiers, watermills.
- Cinema Paradiso. I saw this film in college, freshman year. Oh, it just blew my mind! Talk of a character-focused film! Probably one factor that started my love affair with many things Italian. It helps that the young adult lead actor is pleasing to the eyes.
- Jose Rizal. Marilou Diaz-Abaya directed, GMA Films produced biography of the national hero. It makes Rizal more human, breaks him out of the unreachable, untouchable cast forged by textbook authors.
- Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang. A social commentary, Mike saw this when we were still in college. I saw it much later, we were already out of school then but I’ve known of its existence from childhood. Why, if I’m not a film buff, you ask? Half of the film was shot in Sta. Rita, my hometown on the year I was born. It makes use of most of our landmarks such as our the high school. Much more, my cousin was part of the minor actors, as one of Evangeline’s (Hilda Koronel) friends.
It’s actually lore in our family that the teenaged Christopher de Leon got a bump on his head from a surprised jump after my grandmother hollered at their noisy group while visiting my cousin one evening. Hehehe! There are a lot of other behind-the-scenes stories which are best told by those who were there.
In recent family history, my cousin asked my brother to hunt down a copy because her children want to see it. They now live in Canada and my brother went on a seemingly wild goose chase to get a copy. I think he managed to, after much time and effort spent.
FYI: through the years, our town seems to be an extension of movie studios. Among recently shot films are Kailangan Kita and Tanging Yaman. Several telenovelas too.
